Eneo will double the generation capacity of the solar power plants in Maroua and Guider

Commissioned in September 2023, these structures will as such transition from 35.8 Megawatts of solar and 19 Megawatts/hour of storage on batteries to 64.4 Megawatts of solar and 38.2 Megawatts/hour of storage on batteries.

Douala, Monday 10 June 2024 – On 05 June 2024, ENEO Cameroon signed two new agreements with its partner company Release by Scatec, to double the generation and battery storage capacities of the Maroua and Guider solar power parks.

According to Amine Homman Ludiye, General Manager of ENEO Cameroon, “ENEO has renewed its trust in Release by Scatec to increase two-fold the capacity of its solar power plants in Guider and Maroua. This move will enable Eneo to further secure power generation in the Northern regions and improve on service quality for households and the industrial sector in these regions.  This new step towards more reliable and carbon-free energy is part of Eneo's strategy, which is central to its continued efforts, under the auspices of the Government of Cameroon, to sustainably improve on the power available in Cameroon."

Upon the completion of works scheduled to finish before ending 2025, excluding an instance of force majeure, this increased generation will make it possible to supply more stable electricity, even at peak hours, to households and industries in the northern regions.

Our fruitful partnership with Release by Scatec has been greatly beneficial to people and industries in the north of Cameroon by reducing electricity outages. This new project will further reduce our dependence on diesel and enable the government save significantly on fuel budgets," declared Mr. Gaston Eloundou Essomba, Cameroon’s Minister of Water Resources and Energy.

This extension is a testament to the success of initial projects and the benefits offered by our innovative offer.  By increasing the capacity installed in the country, we are reaffirming our collaboration with ENEO and our commitment to Cameroon as a key market for our solutions", declared Hans Olav Kvalvaag, CEO of Release.

Eneo’s Renewable Energy Development Strategy

The Maroua and Guider solar power parks are the first huge capacity solar parks in Cameroon and in the sub-region. Developed with support from the Government, they fall within the framework of implementation of Eneo’s policy to develop renewable energies. The program was launched in 2018 through the first hybridizations of its isolated thermal power plants in Djoum, Lomie and recently Garoua Boulai. A program to hybridize 07 new isolated power plants is scheduled for 2024.

Eneo’s strategy for renewable energies and ecological transition is built on the following pillars :La stratégie des énergies renouvelables et de transition écologique chez Eneo repose sur les piliers suivants :

  • Ensure continuity in the generation and extension of the lifespan of the major dams in Songloulou, Edea and Lagdo, given that hydroelectricity is still the leading renewable energy;
  • Develop major solar power parks:  phase 1 of Guider and Maroua were the first. We have just launched phase 2:
  • Hybridize isolated power plants by attaching small solar power plants to thermal generation;
  • Facilitate the construction of mini hydro power plants. This is the case in Mbakaou where Eneo has committed to buy power;
  • Advise the Government and interested investors on opportunities: Eneo carried out several studies on niches in all types of renewable energy in Cameroon.

Through this approach, Eneo supports the government’s policy concerning increasing access to electricity, and especially developing renewable energies.
